The Passing of Years  in Jellyfish Years

In summer, natural hazards intensify: warmer water strengthens currents, and jellyfish multiply and appear in the water in vast numbers. In Japan, the dead return from the afterlife to the living world for a brief time during the annual Obon festival. People are warned not to go into the water during this time, as the spirits pull swimmers into the depths and cause them to drown.

Uncontrollable natural hazards thus transform into narratives that are passed down from one generation to the next and become part of cultural tradition and collective knowledge. Fear arises not only from physical threats, but also from their portrayal in the media and culture.

The ground is slippery, as slippery as the line between reality and fiction.
